Primary 7 So Far...

We've started off primary 7 by studying World War 2. As part of our WW2 project, we've made evacuee's suitcases. Many of us had put flags on them until we realised that the children during the second world war probably wouldn't have gone on holiday to other countries around the world. We can open them and see what the evacuees would have packed. Everyone has also been making pictures of the Blitz in London and other major cities. We made them by using oil pastels or chalk and cutting out houses with broken windows and chimneys on black paper. Afterwards we stuck them on to the explosions of colour on the piece of paper. They looked FANTASTIC!

We have learnt about the evacuations, the name for the whole evacuation was: the operaton pied piper. We soon started to understand the major feelings the children, and other people, experienced  during the frightful times of the war. To make things even more lifelike to us we have been watching a film called, ' Goodnight Mister Tom'. In it a boy is sent to a little village and stays with an Older man, at first the man doesn't want him but graduallly gets to know him a bit better. I don't want to give anymore away as it will spoil the fun if you do ever come across it and decide to watch it!
I don't know if you have heard of the book called,' The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' written by John Boyne, sooner or later you arrive at a fence with a nine year old boy called Bruno. Fences like it exist all over the world but we certainly hope you never have to cross such a fence! Normally books give a small clue on the front cover but the boy in the striped pyjamas has nothing of the sort, the front cover is just a few blue pale stripes. Miss Quin, our teacher has been teaching us world war 2 songs, some of them are: Long way to Timperarie, Pack up your troubles in an old kit back, During the second world war, Going to the Country. Alex, Charlie & Angus

On the 25th August we went to the book festival in town to see Geraldine McCaughrean tell us about her new book, Death-Defying Pepper Roux. It is about a boy who is told that he will die at the age of 14. On his fourteenth birthday, Pepper set off on a quest to save himself from Death. Many of us thought that we would read it if we got the chance.

We all knew before coming into P7 that it was going to be an exciting year with lots of responsibilities, and the year kicked off by everyone having to make posters to show how much we wanted to be house captain. We voted for who we thought would be the best rep for our house and who would set a good example to the younger children, as they would be helping at assembly so couldn't be silly in front of the rest of the school. We finally had 8 winners, two for each house. Beth and Beth for Gordon, Caitlin and Callum for Forrester, Emily and Jenny for Lennie and last but not least, Nicola and Sarah for Murray. They all knew they were going to have enormous responsibilities. Good luck to everyone else next time! We will vote again later in the year for another two people from each house so that lots of people will get a chance to fulfill their goal to become house captains.

September 2009, P7B World War 2

Our teacher, Mr Shannon, has been teaching us about World War 2. We are doing evacuation. For the past 3 weeks we have been watching a video called Carries War. It is about a evacuee being evacuated from London to a village in Wales along with her bother Nick. Through our project we have found out that not all evacuees had a great time. Most were unsure about where they were going. We have also been making World War 2 recipes, rationing books, woman at war and information pages.

A few weeks ago for our homework we have been learning World War 2 songs and they are: Its a long way to Tipperary, pack up your troubles, Run Rabbit Run and an Evacuees song that the other primary seven made up !!! For homework this week, we had to find a World War 2 Evacuee costume to wear for our drama session next Tuesday. The boys are going to wear: long socks, flat caps, shorts, v-neck jumpers, and shirts. The girls are going to wear: dresses cardigans, berets, pleated hair, long socks, skirts, and blouses BUT we will be shooting the film in black & white. BY ROBBIE ROSIE FINLAY

 Inside the Earth P7B

We have been learning about what is inside the Earth. We got some information sheets and took some notes. Once we had enough facts, we made posters in our Merit Groups. Our group (Bulletproof) chose a pink background and made a bold title, which was blue, orange and pink. We made a large picture of the Earth which you could open up and see what was inside it. Here are some of the facts: The core is in the very middle of the Earth, then there is the outer core and the mantle.

War Museum Trip

On Wednesday the 28th of October 2009 both of our primary seven classes went on a trip to the National War museum of Scotland at Edinburgh Castle. We had to walk to a tallish building over in a cobbled courtyard. The carpets were very clean and had a red carpet right up to the top layer. We went in and recapped on the second world war, letting our tour guide know what we had already learnt. She told us that we were now officially prisoners of war for the day. Then Niall (one of our classmates) dressed up in an outfit he would of worn if he really was a prisoner of war. He said it was very uncomfy, imagine having to wear the same uncomfortable clothing everyday for six months! We then started to made a crystal radio out of a cardboard tube, Wire, A crystal, Earplugs, Aluminium foil, thin paper, wire connecters and then you were done. We moved close to the wall and then we heard the song called, There'll be Bluebirds over the white cliffs of Dover, and Neville Chamberland made an aunnoucement. Then we were given a little box and had to make out what was said, translating the morse code back to English.
