Visit to Viyele
|
In July 2008, Ms Cavanagh and Ms Christie visited Viyele Primary School in Malawi.
Viyele is situated in the city of Mzuzu in northern Malawi.
Class sizes range from around 60 to 80 pupils.

The school has a roll of approximately 800 pupils.
You will see from the above photograph that classrooms are very basic, with not all pupils having a table or chair. Conditions are crowded.

Almost all of Viyele's pupils wear the school uniform.
The pupils study a variety of curricular subjects * Chichewa (national language) * English * Mathematics * Expressive Arts * History * Geography * Agriculture * Carpentry * Home Economics |

Although the children of Viyele study similar subjects to us at school, the resources they use are quite different (see left). Most of the resources as found in the local environment or are recycled.

Ms Christie and Ms Cavanagh were made to feel very welcome at Viyele Primary School.
